Stipends and Funding

All accepted institute participants will receive stipends of $2,200 to compensate them for their time commitment and to help defray the costs of participation. Stipend amounts are determined by the NEH and are considered taxable income.

Use of Stipend Funds

If accepted to the institute, you will be asked to complete an acceptance form where you will choose your preferred lodging, dining, and parking options. Costs associated with your choices will be deducted from your overall stipend of $2,200. Any remaining funds in your stipend will be paid out to you and are taxable.

If your elections exceed the value of the overall stipend, the AMS will invoice you for the remainder. For instance, if the total cost of your chosen lodging/parking/meal plan options is $2,400, the AMS will invoice you for $200.

During this module, all institute participants meet-together for a series of lectures, seminars, workshops, and field trips. Participants are recommended to arrive on Sunday 27 July. Each day will include ample time for meal breaks, self-study, and group conversation.

Travel and Lodging

Participants are responsible for travel, lodging, meals, and parking during the AMS institute. However, the AMS has secured affordable options in partnership with the University of Maryland and an on-campus hotel. Once accepted to the institute, participants will be asked to indicate which lodging, meal plan, and parking options they prefer. Funds will then be deducted from the $2,200 stipend according to their elections.
