How to Apply

Applicants must use the application form above. As part of the form, applicants will be asked to:
– Provide the required contact information
– Answer short answer questions about their interest in the institute
– Attach a short CV (two-pages maximum) highlighting achievements relevant to the institute’s mission
– Select and/or rank their preferred workshop streams

Once all applications have been received, the participant selection committee will select the cohort. Application notices are expected to be sent in early-April.

Eligibility Criteria

You are eligible to apply if you are a:
• United States citizen, including those teaching abroad at U.S. chartered institutions and schools operated by the federal government;
• Resident of U.S. jurisdictions; or
• Foreign national who has been residing in the United States or its jurisdictions for at least the three years immediately preceding the application deadline.

You are not eligible to apply if you:
• Are a foreign national teaching abroad
• Are related to the project director(s)
• Are affiliated with the applicant institution (employees, currently enrolled students, etc.)
• Have been taught or advised in an academic capacity by the project director(s)
• Are delinquent in the repayment of federal debt (taxes, student loans, child support payments, and delinquent payroll taxes for household or other employees) • have been debarred or suspended by any federal department or agency
• Have attended a previous NEH professional development project (Seminars, Landmarks, or Institutes) led by the project director(s)

NEH does not require participants to have earned an advanced degree. In any given year, an individual may attend only one Institute or Landmarks workshop.

J1 and F1 visa holders should confer with their sponsoring institution regarding their eligibility to receive a stipend from another institution. To be considered for selection, applicants must submit a complete application as indicated on the individual project’s website. Any questions about applications should be directed to the individual project team.

During this module, all institute participants meet-together for a series of lectures, seminars, workshops, and field trips. Participants are recommended to arrive on Sunday 14 June. Each day will include ample time for meal breaks, self-study, and group conversation.

No! While music specialists are welcome to apply, the institute is open to scholars of all backgrounds.

Yes. The NEH requires that all institute participants are US citizens or foreign nationals. If you teach at a foreign institution, you must be a US citizen. If you are a foreign national, you must have resided in the United States for at least three years before the institute application deadline.

No. The NEH does not require institute participants to hold an advanced degree. Five participant seats will be reserved for non-tenured/tenure-track faculty members. Three participant seats will be reserved for advanced graduate students who have advanced to Ph.D. candidacy or are in the final year of a terminal degree program.

Your CV should be a maximum of two-pages and should include credits that demonstrate your connection to the institute material. Include any teaching, publication, service, or public scholarship credits that speak to your interest in the digital humanities and technology.

You can withdraw your application by logging into the Submittable portal and clicking “withdraw application.” If you have having difficulties with the Submittable portal, please contact the AMS staff at ams@amsmusicology.org.

Each participant will be assigned a workshop stream for the second week of the institute. Read the description of each stream and decide which workshops you would like to be considered for. On the application form, rank each workshop 1-3, where 1 is your highest preference. For each workshop you can also select “No rank,” meaning that you would not attend the institute if you were placed in the workshop.
